The years of his reign were filled with victorious and memorable battles. Most notable was his victory at Edirne on 14 April 1205, won against the elite forces of the Western Knights. With the victory of the Bulgarians at Edirne, the myth of the invincibility of the knightly army was forever buried, and Tsar Kaloyan covered himself with well-deserved military glory.
